Business in brief: Holland sells Scenic Bay Motel

The Spokesman-Review

Developer Bob Holland has sold off another piece of his Bayview portfolio.

Daniel Vranes, of Salt Lake City, bought the Scenic Bay Motel from Holland in a sale that was recorded Wednesday at the Kootenai County Court House. According to Holland, Vranes paid $750,000 for the property at 34297 Main St.

Holland is a prominent and controversial figure in Bayview, a resort community on the shores of Lake Pend Oreille. The Hayden developer owns three marinas and a substantial land base in Bayview. His plans for redeveloping the properties have riled some local residents.

In August, Holland’s Bayview portfolio got a little smaller when he sold a mobile home park. In an interview this week, Holland said he put the Scenic Bay Motel on the market to concentrate on a Bayview condo project.

Vranes could not be reached for comment, but Holland said Vranes is planning to raze the Scenic Bay Motel and build condos on the site.

According to Holland, Vranes is the same Danny Vranes who was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics in 1981, and played for the NBA for seven seasons.

Mexican trucks protested

Dozens of truckers rallied at Mexican border crossings in California and Texas on Thursday to protest a pilot program to allow up to 100 Mexican trucking companies to haul their cargo in the U.S.

Carrying signs reading “NAFTA Kills” and “Unsafe Mexican Trucks,” a few dozen protesters circled for two hours at Laredo’s port of entry.

The U.S. plans to give as many as 25 Mexican firms permission by the end of September and add another 25 companies each month until hitting 100 by the end of this year under the one-year program.

Government lawyers said the program is a necessary part of the North American Free Trade Agreement and the trucks would meet U.S. regulations.
