GU wins volleyball tournament

Senior Heather Dunn finished with a season-high 64 assists and added eight digs and four kills as the Gonzaga volleyball team beat host New Mexico 23-30, 30-27, 29-31, 30-22, 15-13 Saturday to win the Comcast Lobo Volleyball Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.

Senior Becky Jones added a season-high 21 kills and 13 digs for the Bulldogs, who have won six straight matches.

Dunn was named Tournament MVP and joined Jones and sophomore Layne Brosky on the all-tournament team.

With the win, GU improved to 8-3 on the season while the Lobos dropped to 9-2.

“Washington State defeated host Nevada 30-28, 30-28, 30-24 to take second place at the AT&T Invitational in Reno, Nev.

Brittany Johnson led the Cougars with 18 kills, 11 digs and four blocks. Jackie Albright added 13 kills and Tara West chipped in six blocks.

Nevada’s Lindsay Baldwin led the Wolf Pack (3-4) with 13 kills and six blocks.

WSU fell 30-19, 30-22, 30-22 to eventual champion UNLV (8-1) earlier in the day.

Maureen Perez had 32 assists and Kelly Hyder added 11 digs to lead the Cougars (9-2).

Hyder and Johnson were both named to the all-tournament team.

“After losing to eventual runner-up Willamette University 28-30, 30-27, 30-27, 30-26 earlier in the day, Whitworth responded with a 3-1 win over Montana-Western to take third place at its Whitworth Invitational.

Junior Sarah Rusch had a match-high 19 kills in the Pirates’ 30-28, 25-30, 30-21, 30-23 win over the Bulldogs (0-10).

Lewis-Clark State (6-2) topped Willamette (2-6) 30-21, 30-19, 30-19 in the championship match.

Rusch and senior Cassie Moore were named to the all-tournament team for Whitworth (5-3).

“Outside hitter Haley Larson had a match-high 35 kills, leading the Idaho (3-6) volleyball team to a 30-24, 25-30, 23-30, 30-25, 15-13 victory over host UC Davis (3-5) at the Hallmark Inn Aggie Tournament in Davis, Calif.

Larson’s kill total was the second most in a single match in Idaho history. She had 26 in 2005 against San Jose State.

“North Idaho won both of its matches on the final day of the Carroll College Tournament in Great Falls, Mont., finishing as the only team to go undefeated.

Meredith Dolny had five aces to lead the Cardinals (13-5) to a 30-18, 30-22, 30-25 win over Rocky Mountain in NIC’s first match.

In the Cardinals’ final match, Lydia Tollbom had 16 kills and Bordelon had 38 assists to lead NIC past Great Falls 30-24, 30-24, 30-21.

Women’s soccer

Whitworth freshman Emily Rohde, playing in her third career match, scored three goals to lead the Pirates to a 7-0 shutout of visiting Saint Martin’s University in a non-conference game.

Greta Thibodeau, Kelly Baker Lindsey Oakes and Jenny Krzymowski also scored for Whitworth, which outshot the Saints 23-2.

The win improved the Pirates to 3-0 while Saint Martin’s fell to 1-4.

“Amanda Swenson’s goal off an assist from Shaunae Phillipy in the 74th minute gave Community Colleges of Spokane a 1-1 tie with host Everett in NWAACC play.

Allison Seymour made six saves for the Sasquatch (1-2-1, 1-0-1), who were outshot 8-6.

Cross country

Eastern Washington’s Paul Limpf placed second in the men’s race while Mattie Bridgmon paced the women with a third-place finish at the Montana Open in Missoula.

Limpf finished the 5-kilometer course in 15 minutes, 35 seconds while Bridgmon crossed the finish line in 18:28.

Hockey

Jace Coyle’s goal 2 minutes into the overtime period gave the Spokane Chiefs a 5-4 win over Tri-City in the Americans’ preseason tournament.

Drayson Bowman finished with a goal and an assist for the Chiefs, who improved to 5-0 in the preseason.
