Sun Devils toast Buffaloes
TEMPE, Ariz. – Rudy Carpenter threw for 269 yards and three touchdowns to help Arizona State rally from a two-touchdown deficit to defeat Colorado 33-14 on Saturday.
Colorado (1-1) jumped ahead 14-0 in the first quarter, but the Sun Devils overcame five personal fouls, an interception and two fumbles to take a 19-14 halftime lead.
ASU (2-0) put the game away with 14 second-half points on a 7-yard run by Ryan Torain and a 20-yard pass from Carpenter to Michael Jones, his second touchdown.
The Sun Devils needed a fast finish to overcome a slow start.
Colorado jumped ahead 7-0 on cornerback Terrence Wheatley’s 35-yard interception return in the opening minute. Carpenter’s throw hit Wheatley in the chest and he outran the pursuit for his second career touchdown on an interception.
