The little Kitchen Engine turns one

The Kitchen Engine has been chugging along for a year now.

To celebrate, the owners are hosting an anniversary celebration Thursday and Friday foodies might want to put on their calendar. Representatives of some of the cookware and kitchen gadgets they sell at the stores will be on hand to show off their wares.

Thursday the store is open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. The morning starts with a cinnamon rolls demonstration by Bosch representatives, followed by a Vita Mix demo, then shoppers can check out a stove-top smoker.

On Friday, there will be Dutch oven demos, a Scandinavian desserts intro, and someone will be showing off Demeyere cookware. The store is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

And did we mention door prizes? Owner Eric Frickle, who opened the store with his wife and parents, says they have giveaways ranging from cookie cutters to cookware.

The Kitchen Engine is in the Flour Mill at 621 W. Mallon Ave.

Gluten-free cooking classes

The Moscow Food Co-op is hosting four cooking classes this fall designed for celiacs, diabetics, vegetarians, vegans or anyone interested in health-related diets. Each class is held in the kitchen of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Palouse at 420 E. Second Ave. in Moscow starting at 5:30 p.m. Registration is required and classes are $18 each.

Here’s the schedule:

Sept. 19: Gluten-Free at Home, taught by registered dietitian Angela Bunce. She and her family adopted a gluten-free diet after her husband and mother-in-law were diagnosed with celiac disease. Gluten-free beef stroganoff and wraps are on the menu.

Sept. 26: Gluten-Free on the Go. Bunce will be making gluten-free pizza.

Oct. 3: Everyday Baking, Gluten-Free. Bunce will teach students about gluten-free Irish soda bread, chocolate chip cookies and meringues.

Oct. 10: Low Carb “Sunday” Soups, with Donal Wilkinson, a vegetarian for 24 years and a Type 1 diabetic. He’ll share recipes for Pistou Soup and Egg Lemon with Spinach Soup.
