Royals 6, Twins 3: At Kansas City, Mo., Gil Meche won for the first time in almost two months, David DeJesus and Mark Teahen homered, and the Royals beat Minnesota. Meche allowed two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings.

White Sox 7, Indians 4: At Chicago, Jim Thome hit his 499th homer and drove in three runs to lead the White Sox over Cleveland. Javier Vazquez won, striking out nine and giving up two runs, one earned, and six hits. He struck out six in a row and eight of 10 over one stretch.

Tigers 5, Rangers 1: At Detroit, Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run home run, Gary Sheffield had a two-run homer and Justin Verlander allowed only a run, leading the Tigers over Texas. Verlander gave up seven hits, a walk and struck out seven.

Yankees 4, Blue Jays 1: At Toronto, Mike Mussina pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning in his return to the rotation and New York beat the Blue Jays. Mussina gave up five singles in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out one, walked three. Mariano Rivera closed it out in the ninth for his 26th save in 29 opportunities.

Angels 18, Orioles 6: At Baltimore, Garret Anderson homered and had five RBIs, Kelvim Escobar earned his 17th win despite yielding six runs, and Los Angeles beat the Orioles. Vladimir Guerrero drove in four runs and Brandon Wood hit his first major league homer for the Angels. Baltimore starter Daniel Cabrera gave up a career-high 10 runs.

Red Sox 5, Devil Rays 4: At Boston, David Ortiz hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning that barely cleared the low right-field wall – eluding a twisting Delmon Young – and lifted the Red Sox over Tampa Bay. Ortiz homered twice and drove in all five runs.
