In brief: Americans, Sweden tied up at Davis Cup

Andy Roddick beat Joachim Johansson 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3), 6-3, but Thomas Johansson defeated James Blake 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 Friday at Goteborg, Sweden, leaving the United States and Sweden tied 1-1 after opening singles of their Davis Cup semifinal.

At the semifinal in Moscow, Germany pulled even with defending champion Russia after Philipp Kohlschreiber upset Nikolay Davydenko 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5. Igor Andreev defeated Tommy Haas 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 in the first singles match on indoor clay.

The winner of the best-of-5 semifinal series will play in the final in November. Should the United States and Russia advance, the U.S. would host the final for the first time since 1992.

In today’s doubles, U.S. Open champion Simon Aspelin will team with veteran Jonas Bjorkman against top-ranked Bob and Mike Bryan.

Flesch leads field

Steve Flesch shot a 7-under-par 65 to take sole possession of the lead after two rounds of the inaugural Turning Stone Resort Championship at Verona, N.Y.

Flesch, who began the day one shot off the lead, was at 13-under 131, one stroke ahead of first-round co-leader Jeff Gove (67) and Brendon de Jonge, who carded his second straight 66. Charles Warren (65) was alone in fourth at 11 under.

“Mark Wiebe shot a 7-under 65 to share the first-round lead at the SAS Championship with another unlikely leader, Champions Tour Q School medalist Boonchu Ruangkit of Thailand, at Prestonwood County Club as the players took advantage of a course softened by much-needed rain.

Dana Quigley trailed the leaders by one stroke and four others shot 5-under.

“British club pro Paul Wesselingh won one match and halved another with different partners as Great Britain & Ireland took a 4 1/2-3 1/2 lead over the United States in the PGA Cup at Greensboro, Ga.

Tulane RB in trouble

Police arrested Tulane football player Ray Boudreaux in connection with the Bourbon Street stabbing that left five people hurt last weekend in New Orleans.

Boudreaux was arrested at his home in Metairie on five counts of attempted murder, according to police, who said the knife used in the stabbings was found in his house.

“Florida State suspended two football players after they were arrested in a bar fight in Tallahassee, Fla., that resulted in felony charges against one of them.

Junior linebacker Geno Hayes and senior fullback Joe Surratt were arrested at a bar near the Florida State campus, police and school officials said. Surratt, 21, was charged with a felony count of battery on an officer.

“Suspended Auburn running back Brad Lester has been cleared by the NCAA to return to the field for the Vanderbilt game on Oct. 6. He was suspended for unspecified academic reasons before the season began.

“WBC heavyweight champion Oleg Maskaev pulled out of his Oct. 6 title defense against Samuel Peter, citing a back injury.
