Zags break tie to win

Tye Perdido’s goal in the 79th minute broke a 1-1 tie and gave Gonzaga a 2-1 win Friday over Loyola (Md.) in the opening match of the Stephen Hensor/Joe Zahler Classic hosted by Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore.

The Greyhounds’ Julian Cantillo opened the scoring with a goal in the 47th minute to give Loyola (6-1) a 1-0 advantage.

GU’s George Josten responded with a goal in the 60th minute to tie the game at one before Perdido’s match-winner.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 4-2 on the season.

Women’s soccer

Ashley Riley and Jamie Blanch each scored a goal as Gonzaga edged Utah State 2-1 in a non-conference match at Martin Field in Spokane.

Dana Peart put the Aggies on the scoreboard with a goal off an assist from Alysa Adams in the 85th minute.

The Zags held a 16-7 advantage in shots.

The victory, the Bulldogs’ fourth in a row, improved GU to 5-2 on the season while Utah State fell to 3-5 overall.

•Kristen Shim scored in the second half off an assist from Erica Jensen to give UNLV a 1-0 non-conference win over Washington State at the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.

Rebels goalkeeper Alicia Lugo was outstanding, saving two potential goals in the second half.

With the loss, the Cougars dropped to 4-1-1 on the season, while UNLV improved to 4-2-1.

WSU concludes play in the event Sunday against Nevada.

•Cortney Casey scored two goals as the University of Texas-El Paso beat Idaho 4-1 in the opening game of the UTEP Border Shootout in El Paso.

Aimee Goss put the Vandals ahead 1-0 with a goal in the seventh minute, but Casey responded with a goal in the 40th minute. The Miners scored three goals in the second half to put away the match.

Idaho fell to 3-3 on the season while UTEP improved to 6-2.

Volleyball

•Washington State opened Pac-10 play with a 32-30, 30-32, 25-30, 30-21, 16-14 loss to Oregon State in Corvallis, Ore.

Adetokunbo Faleti had 20 kills and Jackie Albright added 18 to lead the Cougars. Tara West had 10 kills and five blocks and Cassie Robins added five blocks.

Ashley Evans had 23 digs and K.C. Walsh had 64 assists to lead the Beavers.

WSU dropped to 9-6 overall, while OSU improved to 8-5.

•Junior Sarah Rusch had 23 kills and five blocks to lead Whitworth to a 30-18, 28-30, 30-26, 30-27 Northwest Conference win over Willamette (2-9, 0-3 NWC) in Salem, Ore.

Tracy Schwada added 12 kills and four blocks for the Pirates (7-4, 2-1 NWC).

•Brandy Sonderland had 11 kills and Anne Kitchens added 20 digs as Community Colleges of Spokane (17-5, 3-0 NWAACC) beat Yakima Valley (0-5 NWAACC) 30-22, 30-11, 30-23 in NWAACC play in Yakima Valley.

•Stevie Mussie had 27 kills and Jenna Hagglund dished out 61 assists to lead No. 8 Washington (12-0, 1-0 Pac-10) to a 28-30, 26-30, 30-16, 3-25, 15-11 Pac-10 win over No. 24 Oregon (11-2, 0-1 Pac-10) at McArthur Court in Eugene, Ore.

Hockey

The Spokane Braves edged host Nelson 4-3 in KIJHL play.

With the win, Spokane improved to 2-1-1 on the season while Nelson fell to 2-1.

Football

Quarterback Justin Rummell, who started one game last season, is the first member of last year’s team to re-sign with the Spokane Shock.

Also, defensive lineman Kevin Harbour, who started his collegiate career at UCLA and finished at Grambling State in 2006, has been added to the roster.
