The Spokesman-Review

Whitworth’s last-play, comeback win over Wisconsin-Stout on Saturday netted the Pirates two of the three Northwest Conference player of the week honors in football.

Adam Anderson, a sophomore running back from Riverside, who ran for 114 yards, 94 in the second half, is the Offensive Player of the Week. The transfer from the University of Idaho had a 66-yard touchdown run in the second half to help Whitworth rally from behind.

Greg Caster, a senior linebacker who butted heads with Stout’s 300-pound linemen and came away with 17 tackles, including 2 ½ for seven yards in losses, is the Defensive Player of the Week.

•Eastern Washington junior punter Fritz Brayton, who averaged 47.7 yards on six punts, including a long boot of 53 yards, in the Eagles’ 34-7 win at Idaho State, shared the Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week award.

In the second half, the Washington State transfer had two punts downed at the ISU 8 and 9 yard lines. He ranks fifth nationally with a 43.7 average.

Women’s soccer

Eastern Washington junior midfielder Lillian Bourret, whose strong all-around play included scoring the winning goal in the 55th minute of the Eagles’ 2-1 victory over Utah State, shared Big Sky Conference Defensive Player of the Week honors.

•Idaho sophomore goalkeeper Anna Sandman, who tied the school record with her fourth shutout of the season in a 1-0 win over North Dakota State on Sunday, is the Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week.

She leads the WAC in four goalkeeper categories and is in the top three in two others.

Men’s soccer

Whitworth claimed both Northwest Conference player of the week awards after posting two shutout wins on the road last weekend.

Keith Kirsch, a junior forward from Mt. Spokane and Community Colleges of Spokane, was the offensive selection after collecting a goal in one game and an assist in the other.

Defensive honors went to sophomore goalkeeper Scott Barnum, who made five saves in recording his fifth and sixth shut-outs of the season – and fourth and fifth in a row.
