Area Roundup : EWU takes MDA Invite

The Eastern Washington women’s golf team shot a three-round total of 901 to claim first place at the MDA Invitational co-hosted by EWU and Gonzaga at Hangman Valley Golf Course on Tuesday.

Freshman Kellie Holmstedt finished third with a 7-over-par 223 to pace Eastern.

Three other Eagles joined Holmstedt in the top 10 including Chloe Nelson (fifth, 225), Kristina Gargaro (tied for seventh, 228) and Marli Mikulecky (tied for 10th, 229).

Gonzaga took seventh with a total of 940.

The Bulldogs were led by Sarah Sheffield, who tied for 15th with a three-round total of 232.

Men’s golf

University of Idaho’s Ben Weyland shot a final-round 68 and finished tied for third with a two-day total of 139, helping the Vandals secure third place at the Purple and Red Invitational co-hosted by Weber State University and the University of Utah in Layton, Utah.

Vandals teammate Colter Kautzmann joined Weyland in the top 10, finishing with a 3-under 141 to earn a tie for sixth.

Brandon Crick tied for 44th with a 4-over 148 as Gonzaga took 15th place out of 18 teams.

Also, GU’s Bowdy Ehler earned a tie for 58th with a 151.

Men’s soccer

Central Valley graduate Jay Vela scored two goals, leading Community Colleges of Spokane to a 4-1 NWAACC win over Treasure Valley at Spokane Falls Community College.

Travis Green and Kevin Bourland also scored for the Sasquatch, who held a 14-10 advantage in shots.

CCS improved to 7-2-1 overall and 6-1 in the NWAACC while Treasure Valley dropped to 7-2-1 and 5-2-1 in conference play.

Women’s soccer

Stephanie Hopkins and Lindsay Hood each had goals as CC Spokane defeated visiting Treasure Valley 2-0 in a NWAACC match at SFCC.

Sasquatch goalkeeper Leticia Rubalcava had four saves to preserve the shutout.

With the win, CCS improved to 3-5-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play while Treasure Valley fell to 6-4 and 5-3 in the NWAACC.

Football

Offensive lineman Jason Karcher and wide receiver Daniel Robinson have been added to the Spokane Shock roster.
