Washington State off to best start in school history

Sophomore Carly Dobratz scored twice, guiding the Washington State women’s soccer team to a 3-0 non-conference win over UC Santa Barbara Friday in Pullman.

Mallory Fox added a goal and an assist for the Cougars.

With the win, WSU improved to 6-1-1, its best start in school history through eight matches. The Gauchos fell to 3-4-2.

“Gonzaga and Idaho State (4-3-2) played to a 1-1, double-overtime tie at GU’s Martin Field.

Sheridan Jones scored in the 46th minute to give the Bulldogs (5-2-1) a 1-0 advantage, but the Bengals’ Karissa Henage responded with a goal in the 85th minute.

“Christine Almquist scored in the first half and Stephanie Hopkins added a second-half goal as Community Colleges of Spokane shut out Green River 2-0 in a NWAACC match in Auburn, Wash.

Goalkeeper Allison Seymour recorded the shutout for the Sasquatch (4-5-1, 4-3-1 NWAACC). The Gators dropped to 3-5 in the NWAACC.

“Washington (3-7) scored two second-half goals and beat visiting Eastern Washington 2-1 in a non-conference match.

Abby Jensen scored for the Eagles (3-4).

“Idaho fell behind early and could not recover, falling 3-1 to Loyola Marymount (5-4-1) in a non-conference match in Los Angeles.

Melissa Canite scored in the 73rd minute to put the Vandals (4-4) on the scoreboard.

Men’s soccer

Central Valley graduate Jay Vela scored off an assist from Jeff Srock in the 70th minute and CC Spokane blanked Whatcom 2-0 in a NWAACC match in Bellingham.

With the win, CCS improved to 8-2-1 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Orcas fell to 4-3-1 in the NWAACC.

Volleyball

Christal Morrison had 15 kills, leading No. 8 Washington (14-0, 3-0) to a 30-22, 30-18, 30-24 Pac-10 win over Washington State in front 1,690 fans at Marcia Saneholtz Court in Pullman.

Tara West had 10 kills and Cassie Robbins added seven kills and five blocks to lead the Cougars (9-8, 0-3 Pac-10).

“Monica Groves had 24 kills and five blocks, leading Puget Sound (9-5, 4-1) to a 28-30, 30-23, 30-26, 30-22 win over Whitworth (7-6, 2-3) in a Northwest Conference match at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

“Hannah Cousins had a match-high nine kills and Bryn Smith added six aces as CC Spokane defeated Blue Mountain 30-12, 30-14, 30-12 in a NWAACC match at Spokane Falls Community College.

The Sasquatch are 14-6 overall and 5-1 in conference play, while the Timberwolves fell to 3-10 and 1-5 in the NWAACC.

Hockey

Cole Yurkowski scored in the overtime period to give the Creston Thunder Cats a 3-2 win over the visiting Spokane Braves in a KIJHL game.

Women’s swimming

Washington State opened the season with a 278-158 win over Idaho in Pullman.

Leading the way for the Cougars were Talor Whitaker and Rugile Mileisyte.

Both had five wins with Mileisyte winning the 50-yard backstroke in 27.41 seconds and Whitaker taking the 50 freestyle in 24.65.
