Prep roundup: Staples leads CV boys

Central Valley boys cross country placed first overall at the Sunfair Invitational on the back of a number first-place finishes in the varsity divisions.

In the No. 1 varsity division, Kyle Staples (CV) crossed the line with a time of 16 minutes, 42 seconds – 12 seconds ahead of second-place runner Jeff Osborn of Gig Harbor. In the other boys divisions, Central Valley’s Bryan Aguilar placed third in the No. 2 varsity division with a time of 17:13. Brandon Heintz (CV) won the No. 3 varsity division at 16:23. Also coming in first was Andrew Cesal (CV) in the No. 4 varsity division with a time of 16:22. Jason Stoker (CV) placed second in the No. 5 varsity division at 16:16 and Bryce Aguilar (CV) won the No. 6 varsity division with a time of 15:57. Jayson Taylor (CV) placed fifth in the No. 7 varsity division with a time of 15:43. Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) placed ninth overall with 89 points. Coeur d’Alene finished 11th with 104 points, Riverside came in 15th with 112 points and Post Falls finished 29th with 183 points. St. George’s came in 30th also with 183 points. Luke Syzmanski (Coeur d’Alene) placed fifth in the No. 3 varsity division by running a time of 16:58 and Nick Pierson (Coeur d’Alene) finished fourth in the No. 4 varsity division with a time of 16:38.

In the girls division, Mead had two first-place finishers, edging out Gig Harbor for first overall. Mead finished with 14 points, Gig Harbor had 19. Freshman Amanda Sams finished first for Mead in the No. 2 varsity division with a time of 20:10. Fellow freshman Alessa Midtlying (Mead) placed second in the No. 3 varsity division by also running a time of 20:10. Cailyn Torpie (Mead) won the No. 5 varsity division with a time of 19:44 and another freshman, Baylee Mires, placed third in the No. 7 varsity division with a time of 18:14. Riverside placed 11th overall with 89 points and Ferris followed close behind in 13th with 99 points. University scored 107 points, good enough for 15th place, and East Valley came in 17th with 124 points. St. George’s rounded out the area teams, coming in at 23rd place with 148 points.

“West Valley won the boys team title at the Runner’s Soul/Spokane Valley Classic at Plantes Ferry Park with 47 points. Richard Keroack (WV) came in third overall with a time of 16:29 and teammate Joey Hartmeier placed fifth with a time of 16:51. Justin Degenhardt came in 10th for West Valley with a time of 17:10. Steve Foster rounded out the top West Valley finishers at 14th with a time of 17:13. Matt Cronrath of Odessa won the boys race with a time of 16:18. Following West Valley was Colville with 58 points, Cheney with 72 and Eastmont with 157. In the girls race, Megan Bartlett of Sandpoint won with a time of 18:41. Krystal Hughes of West Valley placed fourth with a time of 19:39. Overall, Hanford won the girls title with 57 points and West Valley placed second with 73 points. Cheney (77), Sandpoint (104) and Colville (143) rounded out the top five.

Andrea Nelson of Shadle Park won the girls individual title at the Mt. Baker Invitational with a time of 17:22. Central Valley won the girls team title with 74 points. Eden Lake of Central Valley placed sixth overall with a time of 18:31. Madi Barnes (CV) finished right behind Lake in seventh place with a time of 18:40.

“Ferris boys cross country finished 18th overall at the Stanford Invitational at Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, Calif. Paul Hawkins was the top finisher for Ferris in 48th place with a time of 16:20. Adam Thorne came in 56th place with a time of 16:27.

Girls soccer

Elise Rooney scored in the fourth minute of overtime to lead Clarkston to a 1-0 Great Northern League win over Colville. Rooney scored on a penalty kick to give Clarkston (2-6, 2-5) the victory. Colville (2-6, 1-6) had their chances with 10 shots on goal, but they couldn’t convert. Kristi Roach made eight saves for Clarkston and Abby Lentz performed well for Colville with six saves of her own.

Volleyball

Mead fell to Vista Murrieta (Calif.) 25-15, 17-25, 15-11 in the championship of the La Jolla Beach City Invitational at La Jolla, Calif. Senior Karyn Mockel and sophomore Alexis Olgard made the all-tournament team. The tournament featured 40 teams.
