Bulldogs earn series split

Jason Chatwood and Mark Castellito each had three hits to lead host Gonzaga University over Pepperdine 6-3 in the final game of a modified West Coast Conference series at the Patterson Baseball Complex and Washington Trust Field.

Matt Fields (4-1) earned the win for the Bulldogs, allowing just two runs, one earned, on eight hits with six strikeouts in six innings. Castellito and Marcus McKimmy both hit home runs for Gonzaga (16-11, 1-1).

The Waves (17-8, 1-1) scored all their runs in the seventh on hits by Trent Diedrich, Chase d’Arnaud and Nate Simon each drove in runs.

Due to bad weather, the series was shortened to two games. The third game will be played later in Malibu if it is needed to determine seeding in the WCC playoffs.

•Santa Clara recorded five hits and scored six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to rally from a five-run deficit to beat Washington State 7-5 in non-league action at Santa Clara, Calif.

Ryan Conan, the Broncos’ (15-9) first baseman, and Jim Murphy, Cougars’ (16-10) first baseman, each went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

•Whitworth held off a comeback by Willamette in the first game and made a comeback of its own in the second game to sweep the Bearcats in a Northwest Conference doubleheader by identical 6-5 scores at Church Field in Lewiston.

The Pirates, who trailed 5-0 through five innings of the second game, rallied for two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh to complete the comeback victory. Billy Rigsby went 2 for 3 with three RBIs in the second game to lead the Pirates to the comeback win.

College golf

Freshman Katie Sorenson, a Central Valley grad, shot a final-round 2-over par 74 to lead CC Spokane (513) to a first-place finish at the Olympic College Invitational in Bremerton, Wash. Sorenson (156) was also the medalist, earning a five-stroke win.

•Jason Azzarito shot a 146 to finish third overall and help CC Spokane finish in third place as a team in the men’s event. Richard Lee (138) of Bellevue CC was the men’s medalist as Bellevue won the tournament.

High school basketball

Two-time State 4A champion Ferris (29-0) is ranked No. 23 in the country in the USA Today’s Super 25 boys rankings. The Saxons are seventh in the USA Today’s West regional rankings. The rankings are based on a school’s strength of schedule, the quality of its wins and players.

High school baseball

All Greater Spokane League games were postponed due to bad field conditions. All games originally scheduled as doubleheaders today are now tentatively scheduled as single games today and Wednesday. Makeup games from earlier this season are scheduled Thursday and Friday. A list of today’s scheduled games are in Today’s Menu on this page.
