Diamondbacks 4, Reds 2: At Cincinnati, Brandon Webb pitched six innings, and Arizona piled up three solo home runs in a victory that dampened Dusty Baker’s debut as Reds manager. Webb allowed three hits and a pair of runs in six innings.

Nationals 11, Phillies, 6: At Philadelphia, Nick Johnson’s tiebreaking RBI double off Tom Gordon highlighted a five-run ninth inning and Washington beat the Phillies. Reigning N.L. MVP Jimmy Rollins hit a tying, two-run home run in the seventh, but Philadelphia’s bullpen blew it.

Brewers 4, Cubs 3 (10): At Chicago, Tony Gwynn hit a sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, and Milwaukee beat the Cubs. Kosuke Fukudome went 3 for 3, hitting a tying, three-run home run in the ninth off Eric Gagne, but it wasn’t enough for Chicago.

Dodgers 5, Giants 0: At Los Angeles, Brad Penny allowed four hits over 6 2/3 innings in his first opening-day start, Jeff Kent hit a two-run home run off Barry Zito and the Dodgers beat San Francisco.

Mets 7, Marlins 2: At Miami, Johan Santana struck out eight in seven dominant innings, David Wright hit a three-run double and New York opened its season with a win over Florida. Wright and Carlos Beltran each doubled twice for the Mets.

Pirates 12, Braves 11 (12): At Atlanta, Xavier Nady hit his second home run of the game, a three-run shot in the 12th inning, and Pittsburgh beat the Braves.

Padres 4, Astros 0: At San Diego, Jake Peavy, the reigning N.L. Cy Young Award winner, hit an RBI single and a sacrifice fly, and pitched seven innings of three-hit ball to lead the Padres to a win over Houston.

Rockies at Cardinals, ppd: The opener between Colorado and St. Louis was postponed by rain in the third inning with the Cardinals leading 5-1 on a home run by Albert Pujols. The make-up is scheduled for tonight.
