Bruins, Senators make playoffs

Tim Thomas came within 8:14 of recording his third straight shutout against Ottawa and Zdeno Chara scored against his former team, leading the Boston Bruins to a 2-1 win over the Senators in Ottawa, as both teams clinched playoff berths Friday night.

Phil Kessel also scored for Boston, which also drew even with Ottawa for sixth overall in the Eastern Conference with 94 points.

The Senators completed their regular-season schedule, clinching a playoff spot midway through the third period when Florida beat Carolina 4-3.

The Bruins close the regular season tonight against Buffalo.

Islanders 4, Rangers 3 (SO): At New York, Richard Park scored a short-handed goal in the second period and added the decisive tally in the shootout for the Islanders to secure the win over the Rangers.

Panthers 4, Hurricanes 3: At Raleigh, N.C., Nathan Horton had a goal and an assist and Florida beat Carolina to prevent the Hurricanes from clinching the Southeast Division.

Flyers 3, Devils 0: At Philadelphia, Martin Biron stopped all 22 shots for his fourth shutout and put the Flyers on the cusp of a playoff spot in a win over New Jersey.

Blackhawks 3, Predators 1: At Chicago, rookie scoring leader Patrick Kane recorded his 20th goal and had an assist as the Blackhawks beat Nashville.

Coyotes 4, Stars 2: At Dallas, Daniel Carcillo had three goals for his first career hat trick to lead Phoenix to the victory over the Stars.

Red Wings forward Tomas Kopecky will have reconstructive knee surgery in two weeks to repair a torn ligament and will miss the playoffs. … Stars defenseman Sergei Zubov had surgery this week in Berlin on a sports hernia injury, leaving his status unclear as the team prepares to face Anaheim in the playoffs.
