In brief: Sheriff deputies search for sex offender
Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies were searching on Sunday for a sex offender wanted in Washington after the fugitive eluded them in a car chase late Saturday night.
The suspect, identified as Logan A. Mattson, 27, is a level 3 sex offender who Washington authorities believe may be armed. Mattson was spotted by a deputy at the westbound Huetter rest area on Interstate 90, but the suspect fled before back-up units could arrive, the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
The suspect was pursued to the Hauser Lake area, but deputies ended the chase because of road conditions. Mattson’s car was later found abandoned on Church Road, but a K-9 unit was unable to recover the suspect’s trail.
About an hour and a half later, a homeowner on Three Forks Road reported that a man knocked on his door and said he was cold and being “chased by the cops,” the Sheriff’s Department said. Deputies responded, but were again unable to pick up his trail.
Mattson, who is believed to be heading for northern Minnesota, is described as 5 feet, 11 inches tall, weighing 185 pounds with brown hair and hazel eyes. Deputies advise anyone coming in contact with Mattson to use extreme caution.

Cocaine seized, 5 arrested, police say
Spokane police arrested five people and seized a large quantity of cocaine during a raid of an east Spokane residence early Sunday, police reported.
Officer Alan Edwards obtained a warrant to search the residence in the 1800 block of North Lacey based on evidence he gleaned during a routine traffic stop last week, police said.
At about 6:30 Sunday morning, police executed the warrant, seizing what officers described as “a large quantity” of cocaine, some heroin and drug paraphernalia.
Arrested at the home and held on drug charges were Rick Bryant, 54, owner of the residence; Douglas Alexander, 48; Kitty Coleman, 39; Tammy Calais, 39; and Jessica Ward, 19, police said.

Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS) is offering amnesty from late charges to pet owners who have neglected licensing their animals.
License fees are used to pay for SCRAPS work, including battling animal cruelty and pet overpopulation and to reunite pet owners.
“Remember your pet’s license is his phone call home,” said SCRAPS Director Nancy Hill.
The Spokane County Commissioners are scheduled to mark the appreciation week with an April 8 proclamation, and to honor Animal Protection Officer Nicole Montano with the year’s outstanding achievement award.
Pets can be licensed at the SCRAPS shelter at 2521 N. Flora Rd.
