Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 4: At Toronto, Frank Thomas hit his 11th career grand slam, Vernon Wells added a two-run homer and the Blue Jays spoiled the season debut of Josh Becket and completed a three-game sweep of the World Series champions.

White Sox 13, Tigers 2: At Detroit, Nick Swisher homered on the game’s second pitch, Carlos Quentin had four RBIs and Chicago handed the Tigers their sixth straight loss. Detroit is off to its worst start since going 0-9 at the beginning 2003, when it lost an A.L.-record 119 games.

Rangers 10, Angels 4: At Anaheim, Calif., Gerald Laird had four hits, homered twice and drove in a career-high six runs to power Texas over Los Angeles. Laird hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning off Jon Garland, his first RBIs off the season, then added an RBI single in the seventh against Darren O’Day and a two-run homer in the ninth off Jason Bulger.

Yankees 2, Rays 0: At New York, Chien-Ming Wang pitched four-hit ball into the seventh inning and Hideki Matsui hit a two-run homer, leading the Yankees past pesky Tampa Bay. Mariano Rivera recorded three quick outs for his third save this season for New York.

Indians 2, Athletics 1: At Oakland, Calif., Cliff Lee won his first start of the season, retiring 10 of his last 12 batters to lead Cleveland over the Athletics and stop the Indians’ three-game losing streak. Lee gave up four hits and struck out four in 6 2/3 innings to beat A’s ace Joe Blanton.

Royals 3, Twins 1: At Minneapolis, Brett Tomko pitched five shutout innings, Alex Gordon hit a two-run single that put Kansas City ahead in the second inning, and the Royals defeated Minnesota. Tomko allowed six hits, struck out three and walked one.
