Gonzaga burns WSU late

Gonzaga scored seven runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally for an 11-8 victory over Washington State (17-14) in non-conference action on Tuesday at the Patterson Baseball Complex.

Ryan Wiegand hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to tie the game at 8. Tyson Van Winkle added a double and Michael Rhodes’ triple scored Van Winkle and put Gonzaga (18-13) up for good.

Golf

The Eastern Washington Eagles outlasted Wyoming for the team title and EWU’s Kristina Gargaro won medalist honors via a scorecard playoff at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic at the Ocotillo Golf Resort in Chandler, Ariz.

Gargaro shot a 5-over-par 221 and tied with South Dakota’s Hillary Gerster. Gargaro prevailed because she birdied the 18th hole and Gerster had a bogie. Teammate Marli Mikulecky finished tied for fifth with a score of 227.

Gonzaga attended the tournament and got 12th place. GU’s Sage Suffecool tied for 18th with a score of 238.

•The Washington State University men placed fourth at the Stevinson Ranch Invitational hosted by the University of Colorado and three Cougars finished in the top 25. Gonzaga also competed in the event and placed 11th.

WSU’s Kevin Tucker and Austin Hurt each shot 4-over 220s and tied for 10th place. Nick Ellis finished 8 over and moved up six places in the final round to finish in 16th place.

Reyn Tanaka led the way for Gonzaga and his 8 over tied him with Ellis. Oklahoma City University’s Anthony Michael won the tournament with his 4-under 212.

•Idaho’s Russell Grove finished fourth at the University of Wyoming Cowboy Classic with a 6-under 204. His effort helped UI earn a third-place tie with Oregon State.

Track and field

Puget Sound’s Caitlin McGrane won the heptathlon at the NWC Multi-Event Championships at George Fox University in Newberg, Ore. McGrane, a Colville High School graduate, recorded 4,295 points in the seven-event contest.

Whitworth’s Kristen Dormaier was third with 4,091 points.

Whitworth’s Ben Spaun finished second in the men’s decathlon, scoring 6,641 points – 75 behind winner Ben Dillow of George Fox, who overtook Spaun in the last event.

•Amanda Peterson of Eastern Washington was named the Big Sky Conference field athlete of the week for her performance at the Al Manuel Invitational in Missoula last Saturday. Her javelin throw of 154-5 at the event was good for sixth in school history.

Men’s tennis

Nico Riego de Dios earned Big Sky player of the week for Eastern Washington. He went 2-0 in singles and doubles last week and helped EWU defeat Portland and Portland State.
