In brief: High-limit poker at Northern Quest

Northern Quest Casino is offering high-limit poker games, with a betting limit of up to $500 per bet with three raises.

Prior to March 28, when the high-limit tables were introduced, the largest bet allowed was $40 with three raises. Northern Quest will be offering three different high-limit poker games, said Janet Chavez, poker room supervisor. They are:

“$1/$2 blind, buy-in $100-$200, betting $2-$200

“$3/$5 blind, Buy in $100-$300, betting $5-$300

“$5/$10 blind, buy in $300-$500, betting $10-$500

Northern Quest has two poker tables dedicated exclusively to the high limit games. Play will start daily at 10 a.m.

Northern Quest also offers no-limit tournaments seven days a week and the casino expects to attract a large number of players who only compete in high-limit tournaments.

Cheney

3-on-3 signup under way

Cheney Parks and Recreation is taking registrations starting Monday for its Mayfest Outdoor 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament scheduled May 9 and 10 in Cheney.

Registrations will be accepted through April 26.

All courts will have officials, and the tournament is set up in a double elimination format. All players get a T-shirt.

‘Cuckoo’s Nest’ StageWest finale

On April 18, StageWest Community Theatre will present the final show in their 2007-‘08 season, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” The show opens with a dinner theatre at 7 p.m. Other dinner show performances will be on April 25 and April 26 at 7. Performances without dinner will be April 19 at 2 p.m., April 20 at 3 p.m., May 3 at 7:30 p.m., and May 4 at 3 p.m.

Performances are at Cheney City Hall Auditorium, 609 Second St. in Cheney.

Tickets for the dinner theater performances are $20 each and other shows are $10 each.

Tickets can be purchased in Cheney at Bicycle Time, Owl Pharmacy and Copy Junction. They are also available in Medical Lake at Owl Pharmacy or by calling 235-4575 for will-call.

EWU students to celebrate TRiO

Students and graduates from Eastern Washington University’s two TRiO programs will celebrate National TRiO Day, first, on April 18 in a Cheney roadside cleanup to show appreciation and thank the community for its support for our nation’s TRiO programs. Those interested in the student-led cleanup can meet at 2:30 p.m. in Monroe Hall, Room 103.

A luncheon celebration will be held on April 24 in the Monroe Hall Lounge, from 1 to 2 p.m.

The two programs, Student Support Services and McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, will recognize the achievements of TRiO students and alumni and current students who have benefited from TRiO programs will be on hand to share success stories. Also expected to attend the luncheon are federal and state legislative representatives, EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo and Eastern faculty, staff and community supporters.

EWU launches International Week

Eastern Washington University will host its inaugural International Week May 12-17, on the Cheney campus. The weeklong celebration is anchored around the two-day, Creative Works and Research Symposium, on May 14-15.

The opening ceremony for International Week will be at 11:30 a.m. on May 12 in the JFK Library and will begin with an international flag procession followed by a welcome address by EWU President Rodolfo Arévalo.

During the week, activities will include an international dinner at the PUB, a study abroad fair, an international movie, musical performances and a multicultural festival.

VASA Lodge plans anniversary dinner

The Spokane chapter of the Swedish American VASA Lodge No. 145 is celebrating 100 years in the Inland Empire with an anniversary dinner and program April 26 at the Sons of Norway Hall, 6710 N. Country Homes Blvd.

The VASA lodge is the oldest in the Pacific Northwest and was organized to become a fraternal outlet for Swedish immigrants. Several churches were started because of the need for Swedish-speaking “friends,” including Salem and Grace Lutheran and The Swedish Tabernacle, now First Covenant. The lodge continues to offer Swedish lessons to interested members.

Exhibits of the past 100 years will be on display, plus scrapbooks of their activities. The Lundin Family Violinists will play Scandinavian music.

JBF consignment sale this weekend

Just Between Friends will hold a consignment sale Friday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Spokane County Fair and Expo Center, 404 N. Havana St.

Everything for sale on Sunday will be half price.

The sale is one of the Inland Northwest’s largest children’s and maternity consignment sales.

Admission is $3 on Friday and Saturday and free on Sunday.
