When art teacher Carrie Scozzaro organized last year’s Timberlake Creates art show, she had no idea just how creative Timberlake was.

Students, parents, teachers and even the school custodian entered and won prizes for their artwork.

The success of last year’s show was the impetus for an even bigger show this year. Everyone in the community served by Timberlake is invited to participate.

“It’s surprising, there are actually a lot of artists out this way who are tucked up here and there,” said Patsey Parsons, a Spirit Lake oil painter who won a third-place prize in last year’s show.

A juried show is planned with three categories: High school student artists, adult amateur artists and professional artists.

Another non-juried exhibition ties in with Sprit Lake’s Centennial Celebration.

Entries in the Spirit Lake Heritage category must relate to the town’s history, geography or culture.

All entries received in the heritage category will be displayed at centennial celebrations scheduled through summer.

Timberlake senior Stesah Laase entered a photo in last year’s show.

“I thought it was a really good way for the community to come together,” said Laase, who is working on stipple drawing for this year’s exhibition. “It was a nice way to show how many people in our community are artistic.”

Artwork is being accepted through April 18. An opening reception will be held at Timberlake High on May 17 and the exhibition will run through June.

Entry fees are $5 to $15.

Lakeland graduation party

A fundraiser for Lakeland High’s Senior All-Night Drug- and Alcohol-Free Graduation Party brought in nearly $25,000.

Senior parent Michelle Harster said money from the March 15 barbecue dinner and auction will allow the senior class to rent Triple Play Family Fun Park for a graduation night party.

Seniors will have run of Triple Play from 10 p.m. graduation day until 4 a.m. Each graduate will receive prizes ranging from laptops and digital cameras to microwaves and camping gear.

“We couldn’t do it without the involvement of businesses and individuals that donate their goods, services and time,” Harster said.

More than 150 silent auction items and 41 live auction items were donated by Lakeland families and businesses in the community.

Harster said those attending the auction had a chance to bid on a 50-inch HDTV, a logging truck full of wood and tickets to Seattle Mariners and Seahawks games.
