Urban garden expert Marty Wingate to speak

A garden writer with expertise in urban horticulture is going to be the featured speaker at an April 22 lecture sponsored by the Friends of Manito organization.

Marty Wingate, a Seattle-based Master Gardener, will speak on garden design ideas that come from various travels. She reviews top garden travel destinations for World Reviewer, a Web publication.

Her talk will be at 7 p.m. at the Lair at Spokane Community College. The cost is $5 at the door. It is part of the Friends of Manito Duncan Lecture Series.

In a posting on her own Web site, Wingate said, “I’m delighted to travel to Spokane and talk about how to take great ideas from your garden travels and use them in our own garden in ‘Bring it Home’ (the title of her talk).”

Wingate writes for Fine Gardening, Country Gardens and American Gardener magazines. She also is regularly featured in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Her latest article on small trees can be seen on the Web at seattlepi.nwsource.com/ nwgardens.

With a master’s degree in urban horticulture, Wingate also has published books, including “Big Ideas for Northwest Small Gardens” in 2003 and “The Big Book of Northwest Perennials” in 2005.
