Cougars’ ‘formula’ works

The Spokesman-Review

Hey, Doug (Douglas J. Day, Letters April 6, “Cougars’ formula lacking”), here’s a reminder: Baylor away, Boise State away, Gonzaga away and Portland State at home – all NCAA tournament teams defeated by WSU in non-conference play.

Pac-10 teams like Washington State don’t necessarily need to schedule “up” out of conference. During the course of their own conference, they played seven teams that were ranked in the Top 25 (at one time) twice.

This is unlike your “Gonzaga Formula” that refers to strengthening RPI rating by scheduling stronger non-conference opponents because the WCC is arguably the worst conference in the country.

By the way, air miles logged are not part of the selection equation. Is this all making sense to you now?

The Cougs were a three seed last year, four seed this year. Sweet 16. And who won the last two times against your Bulldogs?

Let’s be honest. With their tradition, talented personnel and solid coaching, Gonzaga surely underachieved again this year.

Both WSU and Gonzaga have lots to be proud of. It’s great this area has two terrific teams to enjoy. Don’t be so bitter or so jealous because you don’t have all the attention as in the past.
