Parents Council: How was your baby born?

The Spokesman-Review

From the Parents Council blog this week.

For my first son we used a midwife in Alaska at a birthing center. I didn’t go to any classes or watch any videos … we ended up having a very quick, pain-free birth … with just my hubby, my sister (a medical student at the time) and our two midwives. It was by far easier than expected as many of my friends at the time thought I was crazy for doing a medication-free birth!

Did the natural childbirth thing FOUR times. I had quick, easy labors despite the monstrously large children I delivered. … I’d do it again in a hearbeat and have often thought of becoming a doula. Maybe, later. If I survive the teen years.

We seriously considered home birth for our last child and were lucky our HMO didn’t cover it. He was born with a life-threatening congenital defect. Even though we were minutes away from a hospital, with this child every minute counted.

We didn’t have a doula, but we had a very wonderful doctor (who remains our family doctor to this day) for both deliveries. He listened to both of us, gave information and let us make decisions without pressure.

During my last pregnancy, I had a very hard pregnancy with lots of hospital time and health issues from day one. When it was finally time for my daughter to be born our doctor pulled up a chair in the delivery room and said he wasn’t leaving until the baby was born. Except for small bathroom breaks and a snack break, he was right there in the room for the next seven hours. I think he is an exceptional doctor, and he really helped us have successful experiences.
