The Slice

The Spokesman-Review

Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day is on April 24 this year.

The pros and cons do not need to be repeated here.

But parents bringing a child to the office might want to consider adding a “Scared Straight” component to the experience. That is, instead of just talking about careers and job skills, they could offer a few clues about workplace reality.

For example: “Honey, I want you to meet Mr. Stanfield. When you call mommy in the middle of the day and I have to come get you, Mr. Stanfield is the person who has to finish mommy’s work for her.”

Or, “Duhkotah, please say hello to the woman I refer to at home as the Drama Queen.”

Or, “Remember, people here aren’t normally this friendly.”

Just a thought.
