Bills’ game in Toronto highlights new schedule

Associated Press The Spokesman-Review

The Buffalo Bills will play in Toronto on Dec. 7 against Miami as part of an effort to expand their market to Canada.

This marks the first time the Bills will play during the regular season in Toronto, about a 11/2-hour drive from Buffalo. The game was one of the highlights of the NFL schedule released Tuesday.

The season opens Sept. 4 with Washington at the Super Bowl champion New York Giants, a game already announced along with three others from the opening weekend: Chicago at Indianapolis on Sunday night, Sept. 7, and two games Monday night, Sept 8: Minnesota at Green Bay and Denver at Oakland.

For the second consecutive year, a regular-season game will be played in London at Wembley Stadium, with New Orleans the “home” team against San Diego on Oct. 26. The Dolphins and Giants played there last season.

New England, which was upset in the Super Bowl by the Giants but has a record 19-game regular-season winning streak, will open at home against Kansas City on Sept. 7. In what has become an annual highlight game, Tom Brady and the Patriots will be at Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday night, Nov. 2.

In the three Thanksgiving games, Tennessee will be at Detroit, Seattle at Dallas and Arizona at Philadelphia in the night game televised by the NFL Network.

The NFL Network games, in their third season, will start earlier this season with Denver at Cleveland on Thursday, November 6. In all, there will be eight games on the networtk.

Jones delays filing

Suspended Tennessee Titans cornerback Pacman Jones said he’s delayed filing for reinstatement with the NFL until a possible trade is worked out.

Jones told the Michael Irvin Show on ESPN Radio that he had planned to seek reinstatement but changed his mind for now.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Jones for the 2007 season for his off-field conduct, which includes six arrests since being drafted.

Cooper suspended

San Diego Chargers linebacker Stephen Cooper was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2008 season for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

Cooper’s suspension begins on Saturday, Aug. 30, following the Chargers’ final preseason game. He is eligible to return to the active roster on Monday, Sept. 29.
