Spokane County

Burned firefighter in satisfactory condition

A Spokane County firefighter was listed in satisfactory condition Thursday at Seattle’s Harborview Medical Center after he suffered burns while dousing a blaze near Mead.

Burning material got inside Chad Michael’s gear and burned his lower right leg, according to fire officials.

Michael and other firefighters from Spokane County Fire District No. 9 responded to the blaze at 8819 N. Lehman Road about 9:54 a.m. Thursday and found a 40-by-80 shop engulfed in flames, said Deputy Chief Jack Cates.

The shop and its contents – two boats, two cars and two recreational vehicles – were destroyed, Cates said

The estimated damage could be as much as $80,000. The cause of the fire was being investigated.

After the flames had been doused, firefighters were making sure the fire didn’t reignite, and that’s when Michael was hurt. He’s been with District No. 9 since Jan. 1, 2007.

Spokane Valley

Democratic delegates to gather Saturday

Spokane County Democrats expect as many as 1,500 delegates and alternates to gather Saturday at University High School in Spokane Valley to debate a platform and listen to candidates’ speeches.

The main speaker, however, is someone who isn’t running for election. Former Gov. Booth Gardner, who filed Initiative 1000, also known as the Death With Dignity Initiative, will deliver the keynote speech shortly after 10 a.m., county Chairwoman Kristine Reeves said. Candidates for congressional, county and legislative offices are also on the agenda.

This will be the second weekend a county party organization has held a convention in a local high school. Republicans held their convention, with about 540 delegates, last Saturday at Lewis and Clark.
