In brief: Memphis’ Anderson, Dozier enter NBA draft

The Memphis Tigers’ entire starting lineup last season has declared for the NBA draft now that juniors Antonio Anderson and Robert Dozier have become the last from the 2008 NCAA runnerup to announce.

The school stated Wednesday that neither Anderson nor Dozier is expected to sign with an agent, leaving the possibility of returning for their senior season open.

They joined Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts as early entries along with senior center Joey Dorsey.

“Kansas guard Mario Chalmers has declared for the NBA draft, but has not signed an agent.

“Texas guards D.J. Augustin and A.J. Abrams declared themselves eligible for the NBA draft, although neither player hired an agent.

“Xavier coach Sean Miller has agreed to a 10-year contract extension following a 30-7 season.

Calder finalists named

Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Nicklas Backstrom were chosen as finalists for the Calder Trophy, given to the NHL’s top rookie.

Kane, the first pick in the 2007 draft, and Toews, the third pick the year before, are teammates on the Chicago Blackhawks. Backstrom plays for the Washington Capitals.

The winner will be announced on June 12 on the NHL’s awards program.

“Coach Bruce Boudreau has been given a contract to stay with the Washington Capitals, though terms were not disclosed.

“The Vancouver Canucks hired agent and former NHL player Mike Gillis as general manager.

“Anaheim announced that general manager Brian Burke will remain with the team at least through next season.

Jones’ mates fight

Marion Jones’ relay partners are raising money to pay legal fees in the fight to retain the 2000 Olympic medals they’ve been ordered to return by the International Olympic Committee following Jones’ admission of doping during the Sydney Games.

Jones teamed with Jearl-Miles Clark, Monique Hennagan, LaTasha Colander-Richardson and Andrea Anderson to win gold in the 1,600-meter relay, and with Chryste Gaines, Torri Edwards, Nanceen Perry and Passion Richardson to win the bronze in the 400.

“Boston College defensive end Brady Smith has been kicked off the team after he was charged in an on-campus rape. He pleaded not guilty to charges of raping a 21-year-old student and breaking and entering with an intent to commit a felony during the weekend incident.

“The University of Hawaii has not been able to resolve its dispute with former football coach June Jones over $400,008 the school says it is owed for the early termination of his contract.

“A man who had a business meeting with former Olympic ice dancer Pasha Grishuk is being looked at in the investigation of an apparent attempt to drug her, authorities in Santa Ana, Calif., said.

“Cameron Argetsinger, who started the road-racing tradition at Watkins Glen, N.Y., 60 years ago, has died at 87.

“Cecilia Colledge, an innovative figure skater who was the youngest athlete to compete in the Winter Olympics, has died in Boston at age 87.
