Dawkins new Stanford coach

Johnny Dawkins, a longtime assistant coach at Duke, has been hired as Stanford’s new men’s coach.

Dawkins replaces Pac-10 Coach of the Year Trent Johnson, who left for LSU earlier this month, two people close to the situation said Saturday. Both people requested anonymity because Stanford had not made an official announcement, which could come as soon as Monday.

Dawkins, 44, was an All-American at Duke and has been on the coaching staff there since the 1997-98 season.

Dawkins has no prior head coaching experience.

He most recently was the Blue Devils’ top assistant under Hall of Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski, responsible for player development and other duties.

Dawkins finished his playing career at Duke as the school’s career scoring leader with 2,556 points – a mark that was broken in 2006 by J.J. Redick.

Dawkins was the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 1986 NBA draft by San Antonio, and played nine NBA seasons with the Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers and Detroit Pistons.

Jordan shows Vincent the door

Sam Vincent was fired by the Charlotte Bobcats after one turmoil-filled season as coach.

Part-owner Michael Jordan, who has the final say on all basketball decisions, dismissed Vincent less than a year after he gambled by giving him his first NBA head coaching job.

Struggling to find a consistent rotation and clashing with players, the inexperienced Vincent led the Bobcats to a 32-50 record.

Titans confirm Roos contract

Former Eastern Washington University player Michael Roos told the Tennessee Titans he wanted to wrap up contract negotiations before the 2008 season started. Team officials obliged their left tackle, agreeing to a six-year, $43 million extension.

The team confirmed the deal that makes Roos the third-highest paid left tackle in the NFL behind Orlando Pace and Walter Jones.

His contract was set to expire after the 2008 season.

The deal includes $15 million in guaranteed money, including a $4 million roster bonus.

Roos, who has started 48 consecutive games, could earn up to $1.5 million more from Pro Bowl berths.
