The Slice

The Spokesman-Review

Slice reader Lynn Walker noticed a newborn named “Maverick” in the births list the other day.

“OK, that’s fine,” wrote Walker. “There have been plenty of kids named Cheyenne. But I’ll know something is up when I see a baby named Sugarfoot.”

Of course, in the old TV western, Maverick was actually a last name. So here’s a scary thought. The parents in this case might have been going for an allusion to the 1986 Tom Cruise movie, “Top Gun.”

Just think. Little Maverick’s future siblings could be called Iceman, Goose, Viper, Wolfman, Slider, Jester, Hollywood and so on.

Or maybe, if Maverick has a sister someday, she could be named after the character that actress Kelly McGillis played in “Top Gun” — Charlie.
