BBC’s ‘Robin Hood’ airs season finale

By MIKE HUGHES Gannett News Service

Tonight’s might-see

“Robin Hood,” 9 p.m., BBC America.

Saturdays have become adventure night on BBC. Next week, the “Primeval” miniseries brings giant creatures to modern times.

Tonight, however, is “Robin Hood.” After a rerun at 8 (the sheriff heads into the woods), there’s the season finale at 9.

The people of Locksley need help again, but Robin is on a mission for King Richard. Marian takes over, in her alter ego of The Night Watchman.

Other choices include

“Wipeout,” 8 and 9 p.m., ABC. Here are two reruns of the Tuesday game show, filled with stunts and splashes.

“The Unit,” 8 p.m., CBS. An effort to snatch a defecting scientist turns iffy when Kim has a dream similar to the plan.

“Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal,” 9-11 p.m., Lifetime. A new coach (Jenna Dewan) arrives at a school where five flashy cheerleaders seem to have no restrictions. Soon, lots of loud, angry things happen. The story (based on real events) is interesting, but Dewan lacks believability and the script lacks variety. Even with all that cheerleading, there’s no hint of zest or fun.

“Eli Stone,” 10 p.m., ABC. After Eli acts up in court, his job is in jeopardy.

Sunday’s might-see

“Design Star” finale (9 p.m.) and “Summer Showdown” debut (10 p.m.), both HGTV.

First, the channel names its new “Star,” getting his or her show. It will be Jennifer Bertrand, 32, of Olathe, Kansas, or Matt Locke, 38, of Los Angeles.

Last week, each had $20,000 and 36 hours to complete rooms for a Hurricane Katrina victim. Then viewers voted.

This finale will include a reunion. Then comes a “Showdown” between two of the channel’s experts. Vern Yip and Cynthia Rowley must each remake a room in six hours.

Sunday’s might-see II

“Mad Men,” 10 p.m., AMC.

Last week’s season opener was well crafted, but didn’t have much of a plot.

This one makes up for that. A plane crash creates instant crises, personal and business. Meanwhile, we get surprising peeks at the private lives of Paul and Peggy.

Other choices include

“High School Musical: Get in the Picture,” 8 p.m., ABC. The 12 finalists visit “High School Musical 3” and audition for director Kenny Ortega.

“The Simpsons,” 8 and 8:30 p.m., Fox. In the first rerun, Sideshow Bob seeks revenge; in the second, Homer loses shards of his memory.

“Million Dollar Password,” 9 p.m., CBS. This rerun has Susie Essman and game-show veteran Betty White.

“Generation Kill,” 9 p.m., HBO. An odd sort of humor – droll, dry, darkly cynical – runs through this hour. The supply truck was destroyed, men are hungry, missions are perplexing and the Marines have little to do except grumble.

“L.A. Hard Hats,” 9 and 10 p.m., National Geographic Channel. This so-so film follows people building a Los Angeles skyscraper. It adds lots of thunderous music and narration.

“Pam: Girl on the Loose” debut, 10 p.m., E. Don’t expect any loose-lady shocks here. Pamela Anderson does flash her body around, but otherwise comes across as a sober soul and an animal-rights activist.

“Battleground Earth” debut, 10 p.m., Planet Green. A rocker (Tommy Lee) and a rapper (Ludacris) try to outdo each other in ecology. That means Lee and his ex-wife (Anderson) compete. She even mentions in her show that she’ll be living with Lee while her new house is being finished.
