Slain student’s family files suit

The family of a student who was shot to death at Foss High School has filed a lawsuit against the Tacoma School District.

The family of the student, Samnang Kok, is seeking $35 million.

In the wrongful death lawsuit filed Thursday the family says the district should have known that the teen accused of the shooting in January of last year was dangerous.

The student, Douglas Chanthabouly, had attended four high schools, had a history of psychiatric hospitalizations and suffered from hallucinations.

He’s been charged with murder and has spent time in Western State Hospital.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports a hearing Aug. 29 may determine whether he’s competent to stand trial.

Dozens of cats seized from home

SpokAnimal workers wearing protective gear have seized between 40 and 60 cats from a northwest Spokane home. Four dogs were also seized.

Animal control officials said Friday that many of the animals are sick.

A neighbor called SpokAnimal two months ago to report a terrible smell coming from the house.

The homeowner was not identified.

Spokane police say only three cats can be housed at a residence unless a special license is obtained.
