Woman says suspect raped her

A woman said a man suspected of opening fire on a group of young adults, killing three, had raped her the night before in the same northern Wisconsin woods where the victims were slain.

The woman said she told her parents about the assault, and they reported it to authorities. She said officers came to her home late Thursday, mentioned the shootings that occurred earlier that day along a riverbank in the town of Niagara – near the same spot where she claimed to have been sexually assaulted – and asked her to describe her attacker.

The suspect, whom the woman described as a casual friend, was arrested Friday.

Scott J. Johnson, 38, is expected to appear in court Monday or Tuesday, Marinette County Chief deputy Jerry Sauve said Saturday.

Father accused of kidnapping arrested

A man accused of kidnapping his 7-year-old daughter during a supervised visit in Boston last weekend was arrested Saturday in Baltimore and the girl was found safe, authorities said.

Clark Rockefeller will be arraigned Monday to begin extradition proceedings. He is charged with felony custodial kidnapping, assault and battery and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis said.

Investigators invented a ruse to get Rockefeller out of the apartment and away from the child. They called the suspect and told him that his boat, docked nearby, was taking on water.

He was arrested when he left the apartment, Davis said. The girl was found apparently unharmed inside.

“Her first words were she was very happy to see very nice people … she was ecstatic,” said Noreen Gleason, FBI’s assistant special agent in charge of the Boston division.

Girl falls down chimney, found OK

A 12-year-old girl just wanted to show her cousin the view from her family’s Manhattan rooftop. Instead, she fell into a chimney and plummeted down the flue for 14 stories, emerging nearly unscathed to tell her story after landing in a pile of soot.

Grace Bergere was recovering at a hospital on Saturday with an injured hip. A 2-foot-deep pile of ash and dust probably saved her life by cushioning her fall, fire officials said.

Fire Chief Austin Horan said the 12-year-old emerged “relatively unscathed” from the accident Thursday night.
