Gates open at 9 for Skyfest

Thousands of people are expected at Fairchild Air Force Base today and Sunday for Skyfest, the base’s free open house and air show.

Gates open at 9 a.m. and close at 5:30 p.m., and the aerial demonstrations begin about 11 a.m. The demonstration flights are the same both days, with the Navy’s Blue Angels wrapping up the air show with a performance scheduled to start about 3:10 p.m.

Visitors are asked to enter through the main gate on Highway 2, although vehicles with disabled drivers or passengers should use the gate on Graham Road.

Base officials urge attendees to bring sunscreen, sunglasses, hats and lawn chairs, but no beverages in bottles or cans. No pets, weapons, fireworks, walkie-talkies, bicycles, skateboards or inline skates are allowed.

Lawyers want Coe at hospital

Lawyers for convicted rapist Kevin Coe filed court papers Friday asking for him to be held at Eastern State Hospital instead of the Spokane County Jail during his civil commitment trial next month.

Coe has served his prison sentence for the rape of a South Hill woman and should not be housed with criminals in the county jail as he battles efforts to detain him indefinitely as a violent sexual predator, said Coe’s lawyer, Tim Trageser.

The state will oppose the motion, said Assistant Attorney General Malcom Ross. State laws on sexually violent predators say they should be detained in a “secure facility” during their trials, not in a mental hospital, Ross said.

Spokane County Superior Court Judge Kathleen O’Connor will hear the motion next week. Coe’s trial is scheduled to start Sept. 15.

Man, woman found dead

A man and woman were found shot to death Friday morning near Dobson Pass, north of Wallace on the way to Murray and Prichard, according to Shoshone County Sheriff Chuck Reynalds.

Both appeared to be in their early to mid-20s, he said. Authorities had not identified the bodies Friday night.

A huckleberry picker spotted the bodies and called 911 about 8:30 a.m., Reynalds said. Investigators remained on scene through the day.
