Do’s and don’ts

Tips for parents

11th grade, Lewis and Clark

Do

Be aware of our actions but, please, RESPECT OUR PRIVACY!

Cover the bill when we go over on calling and text messaging limits.

Consider that this is not the world you grew up in and that things are much different for youth today

Take us out shopping when our old clothes are tattered and torn and we want new ones

Consider that there are things that we would rather keep private.

Listen to our point of view and consider it.

Keep an open mind when we tell you about teachers or friends, etc…

Let our friends come over, and feel free to suggest activities

You can care about what we are up to, but there is no need to nag.

Don’t

Post comments on our Facebook or MySpace or add all of our friends to your buddy list.

Send long text messages or try to be hip by using texting slang.

Say things like, “I’ve been around longer…” or “Well, when I was a kid…” or, “Back in the old days…”

Try to get us to buy clothes that you think are stylish or that you would wear (No, we don’t need matching outfits).

Tell people embarrassing stories from our childhood.

Tell us, “I’m right, you’re wrong” or,”Because I said so.”

Share everything we say. Let us trust you with our thoughts and secrets.

Force activities. Let us do what we want to (and don’t be offended if we don’t want to do what you want).

Be paranoid or harass us by assuming the worst.
