Our mission: J-Campers explore relationships between teenagers and their parents

By Rachel Perrier 8th grade, St. Charles

In June, about 100 students from various schools in grades 6 through 12 applied for Journalism Camp, held by The Spokesman-Review and its teen publication, the Vox. This work is the product of the 14 students accepted to the camp.

The students worked out of The Spokesman newsroom under the guidance of Vox adviser Erin Daniels.

“I got to run up to random people in the streets to ask them what they like to do with their teens,” Elizabeth Noonan of Mead High School said. “Some of them give me the creeps.”

The campers even learned a few things along the way.

“You (got) to see what goes into making a real newspaper,” University High School senior Anthony Kuipers said.

When not writing articles, the journalism campers met different people in the newsroom and toured The Spokesman-Review building.

“It’s been a new opportunity,” Francesca Baier of St. Thomas More said. “It’s not like an English class, it’s a new field.”

For their final project, the campers chose to write about the mysterious relationship between teens and their parents. These articles are the result of five days of training and work.
