The Los Angeles Angels keep soaring and the New York Yankees keep slipping. That trend continued this weekend as the A.L. West leaders completed their first three-game sweep of the Bronx Bombers since May 1995.

Chone Figgins hit an RBI single with one out in the ninth inning against closer Mariano Rivera, and the Angels beat the fading Yankees 4-3 on Sunday in Anaheim, Calif. The Halos have won five of seven meetings against the Yankees and host them for three more games next month.

“They’re a good team, obviously. It was a devastating series for us, but we’ve got to rebound,” Alex Rodriguez said after New York’s 10th loss in 15 games put them 8 1/2 games behind A.L. East-leading Tampa Bay and four games behind Boston in the wild card race.

Carpenter hurt again

St. Louis starter Chris Carpenter was forced to leave the game against Chicago in the sixth inning with a strained right triceps.

The 2005 N.L. Cy Young Award winner underwent elbow ligament replacement surgery in July 2007.

Carpenter was making just his third start since spending 270 games on the disabled list the last two seasons.

DL cools Crawford

Tampa Bay put outfielder Carl Crawford on the 15-day disabled list with a hand injury.

Crawford injured a tendon in his right middle finger making a check swing in Saturday night’s 11-inning win over the Mariners. Crawford had hit in his last 11 games, batting .349 during his hitting streak with five triples.

Wakefield heads to DL

Boston knuckleballer Tim Wakefield will miss at least two starts and go on the disabled list because of a stiff right shoulder.

Wakefield returned to Boston on Sunday for a cortisone shot after cutting short a throwing session the previous day. Wakefield missed the A.L. Division Series and World Series last year with a similar injury.

Clearing the bases

Vernon Wells was activated off the 15-day disabled list, returning to Toronto’s lineup after missing 26 games with a strained left hamstring. … Cincinnati activated right-hander Aaron Harang from the 15-day disabled list.
