Eagles picked fourth in poll

The Eastern Washington University volleyball team was picked fourth in the Big Sky Conference preseason poll voted on by coaches.

Portland State was selected as the preseason favorite, followed by Sacramento State and Weber State, respectively.

EWU has finished in the top three in the conference standings for the past 12 seasons. The Eagles have advanced to the league tournament semifinals for 11 consecutive years.

Last season the Eagles finished third with a 12-4 record in conference play. EWU’s 2008 seasons begins with a home exhibition match against an alumni team on Aug. 23 and regular-season action begins on Aug. 29 against Denver in the Hilton Classic in Fort Collins, Colo.

The Spokane Shock placed receiver Etu Molden, a former AFL two-way standout, on non-claimable re-assignment.

Molden, who won an ArenaBowl with the Chicago Rush in 2005 and was named to the AFL’s All-Ironman team in 2006, played in four games for Spokane this season and recorded 18 catches, 223 yards and three touchdowns.

Defensive lineman David Stanton has been activated.

Golf

Alex Mroz of Woodinville, Wash., shot a 5-under par 67 and is leading the pack of 137 players after Monday’s opening round of play at the PNGA Junior Boys’ Amateur Championship at Mill Creek Country Club in Mill Creek, Wash.

Spokane native Hank Frame (University High School), Matt Rawitzer of Bellingham, Wash., and recent U.S. Amateur Qualifier, Ricky McDonald of Shoreline, Wash., are two strokes behind Mroz after all finishing 3-under par.

Other locals competing include: Rob Seibly, who shot a 73 on Monday, Justin Haase (77), Matt Montecucco (78), Christian Alfaro (79), Dylan Maine (79), Peter Gullickson (79), Chad Smith (80), Evan Dyar (86) and Ryan Newcomb (91).

•Spokane’s Corey Prugh (Manito Golf and Country Club) won the TaylorMade-adidas Golf PGA Assistants Championship with a two-day total of 135 (65-70) in Olympia, Wash.
