Boise uses huge lead to hold off Indians

 

BOISE – The Boise Hawks built a 10-1 lead over the Spokane Indians after seven innings Tuesday night.

It almost wasn’t enough.

Marwin Gonzalez drove in four runs as the Hawks held on for a 10-8 Northwest League baseball win at Memorial Stadium after Spokane scored seven runs in the eighth.

The Hawks (32-23) needed the win as they attempt to catch the Indians (38-17) in the East Division. Working against Boise: The season is down to 21 games. Working for the Hawks: Ten of those games are against Spokane.

Boise jumped on Spokane starter Tim Murphy (3-1) for four earned runs in 31/3 innings. Murphy hurt his cause with four walks, including two during the Hawks’ three-run fourth.

Boise extended the lead to 8-0 with a three-run sixth. Andrew Rundle had a two-run single and scored on Josh Vitters’ single.

Trailing 10-1, Spokane broke free in the eighth. Dennis Guinn hit a two-run homer to left field and Jared Bolden added a two-run double to center to highlight the seven-run inning.

Eric Fry gave Spokane hope in the ninth with a leadoff single, but the game ended on a flyout and double play.

The rubber game of the three-game series is tonight.

Spokane has Thursday off before starting a five-game road series Friday at Salem-Keizer, which is battling Eugene for the West Division title.
