Thieves pluck window air-conditioning units

From staff reports

In December, thieves target snow throwers. In August, it’s air conditioners.

Loud noises awakened two Spokane Valley residents early Tuesday, noises apparently made by thieves stealing their window-mounted air conditioning units, said Spokane Valley police spokesman Sgt. Dave Reagan.

In the first incident, a victim in the 1100 block of North Mamer Road said she was awakened by an unusual noise and then heard her dog start barking. She called 911 and asked that officers check the area.

In checking her home, she discovered that a living room air-conditioning unit was missing. The suspects had removed wood trim from around the unit, reached in to unplug it and then hauled it away.

Officers were unable to locate any potential suspects.

About 3:15 a.m., a resident in the 1400 block of North Best Road also was awakened by noises and discovered his window-mounted air conditioner had been stolen.

The victim said his air-conditioning unit was very heavy and would have required two suspects to lift it. His wife heard a vehicle speed out of the area, but saw nothing.

Anyone with information about either burglary is encouraged to call the Spokane Valley police at 242-TIPS.
