A little fuel for Rock the Vote

Sheryl Crow (Associated Press / The Spokesman-Review)

Sheryl Crow wants your vote – and figures she can get it for a song.

The Grammy Award-winning singer is offering a free download of her politically charged tune “Gasoline” to anyone who logs onto the Rock the Vote Web site or anyone on the group’s mailing list.

And the first 50,000 people who register three friends to vote will get a free digital copy of her album “Detours.”

“I hope people wake up and emotionally engage in issues,” she says.

Crow, 46, was one of the founding artists of Rock the Vote 18 years ago. She says the “Detours” album fits perfectly into the group’s cause since the lyrics touch on topics such as adoption, breast cancer, the war in Iraq, the environment and Hurricane Katrina.

“It’s about the issues that everyone’s talking about, but there’s a lot of hope,” Crow said. “At this moment in my life, writing about anything else would be uninteresting and impossible because I feel such urgency.”

Rock the Vote aims to register 2 million young people to vote by November – the largest youth voter drive in history by three times.

Pas de deux

Speaking of politics, Roseanne Barr is calling fellow actor Jon Voight a “frightened little girl in a pink tutu” for supporting Republican John McCain instead of Democrat Barack Obama.

Voigt’s reply, in a statement to the “Extra” TV newsmagazine: “My allegiance to Senator (John) McCain becomes stronger with any assault that tries to deter my loyalty to him. I can only pray that good people see (Roseanne) for what she is (sick of mind).”

Foreign policy

Hot on the heels of yesterday’s news about Jessica Simpson doing endorsements for a Dallas-brewed beer comes word that Sanjaya Malakar is hawking life insurance.

The former “American Idol” contestant is selling Nationwide Insurance in a new ad that’s part of the “Life Comes at You Fast” campaign.

In the spot, Malakar, sporting his signature “ponyhawk,” visits a wise man who tells him he needs a retirement plan – and a haircut.

Prisoner of awkward hands

“Harry Potter” star Daniel Radcliffe has revealed that he suffers from a mild form of dyspraxia, a neurological disorder that impairs coordination.

“Thankfully his condition is very mild and at worst manifests itself in an inability to tie his shoelaces and bad handwriting,” his rep says.
