Olympics

Postcard from Beijing

Kevin Sherrington of the Dallas Morning News shares his “best and worst” of the Olympics:

Best Chinese staple consumed personally: Roast duck.

Worst Chinese staple, passed: Tie: camel hump, camel paw, deer lips, deer brain, frog stomach, sheep testicles, ostrich head, duck tongue, goat legs, silkworm, scorpion, beetle and the fish swimming in a shower stall at a dive outside Tiananmen Square.

Worst question: After the U.S.’ 9-1 win over China in a wild game that included seven hit batsmen, a Chinese reporter asked China’s baseball coach, Jim Lefebvre: “Why did we lose by so much?”

Oddest quote: Florida Marlins catcher Matt Treanor, wife of beach volleyball gold medalist Misty May-Treanor, revealed that his wife sprinkled her mother’s ashes on courts in Athens and Beijing. “She brings some of her mom with her,” he said.

Worst P.A.: Perky announcers at the softball venue educated fans on the sport with occasional plums, such as, “In softball, only the team up to bat can score.”

Worst prediction: After winning his eighth gold medal, swimmer Michael Phelps revealed that his middle school English teacher once told him he’d never be successful at anything.
