After 10 more acts, America can vote for ‘Talent’

By MIKE HUGHES Gannett News Service

Tonight’s must-see

“America’s Got Talent,” 8-10 p.m., NBC.

Fresh from its Olympic push, this show hopes to dominate ratings for a while.

Tonight, 10 more of the 40 acts perform; then viewers vote. That will be repeated next Tuesday and Wednesday as “Talent” pushes toward its Oct. 1 finale.

Tonight’s must-see II

“Some Like It Hot” (1959), 5 p.m., Turner Classic Movies.

TCM focuses on Tony Curtis, who has starred in a rich assortment of great films.

“Hot” is a comedy with wit, heart and a master (Billy Wilder) directing Curtis, Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe.

Curtis could be dead serious, as shown in “Sweet Smell of Success” (1957) at 7:15 p.m. and “The Defiant Ones” (1958) at 9. Still, this day has lots of light stuff, including “Boeing Boeing” (1965) at 2 p.m.

Other choices include

“Clueless” (1995), 7 and 9 p.m., Oxygen. Amy Heckerling skillfully wrote and directed this sweet-spirited satire of semi-vacant California teens. She mocks them, yet keeps them likable, especially through Alicia Silverstone’s charm.

“Bones,” 8 and 9 p.m., Fox. The first rerun centers on the murder of an aspiring pop singer – played, appropriately, by former “American Idol” contestant Ace Young. The second offered a bizarre – and hard-to-believe – twist, amid suspicion that someone in the lab is helping a serial killer.

“Greatest American Dog,” 8 p.m., CBS. This show started with a dozen dogs and their people. Tonight, the eighth one is eliminated.

“Criminal Minds,” 9 p.m., CBS. Two teens have been killed in a small Texas town.

Democratic convention. It’s time to meet the vice-presidential candidate. The big networks – ABC, CBS, NBC – jump in at 7 p.m., but others are there earlier. Officially, that’s 3 p.m. on CNN, 4 p.m. on MSNBC, 5 p.m. on KSPS and KUID and TV One and 6:30 p.m. on Fox News Channel. Most of those will base shows from the convention floor all day; C-SPAN starts at 7 a.m.
