Boy hit by dump truck hospitalized

A city of Spokane dump truck hit a 9-year-old boy at D Street and North Loop in the Finch Arboretum area just after 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The boy was taken to Sacred Heart Medical Center with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, Spokane police Officer Jennifer DeRuwe said.

The truck and a city street sweeper were doing maintenance in the neighborhood when the boy was out riding a Razor scooter.

“It appears he was in the roadway and was struck by the city dump truck,” DeRuwe said.

From items left in the street, it appeared the boy was wearing a helmet. Officer David Daddato said the boy underwent surgery for a pelvic injury.

DeRuwe said that because the incident involved a city employee and an injured child, city collision reconstructionists were sent to investigate at the scene.

Police will not release the name of the driver until it’s clear who was at fault.
