Durfey takes second at NFR

LAS VEGAS – Tyson Durfey of Colbert took second place in round one of tie-down roping, collecting $13,251.20 on the first night of the National Finals Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Center Thursday.

Durfey, who moved up from ninth to eighth in season winnings, had a time of 7.7 seconds, finishing second behind Hunter Herrin (7.5), who is second in total winnings behind Josh Peek. Peek placed ninth in the first round.

Ryan Gray of Cheney placed fourth in bareback riding aboard Wise Guy with a score of 85. He won $7,031.25 and moved up one notch to seventh in the season standings. Season leader Steve Dent was second behind Chris Harris.

Zach Oakes of Elk failed to record a score in bull riding aboard Speed Trap. Oakes was ninth coming into the competition. Overall leader Chance Smart took fifth. Bobby Welsh was first.
