Some advice for Few

The Spokesman-Review

Far be it for me or anyone else to offer advice to coach (Mark) Few, but here goes anyway.

I understand the Zags are deep with talent and have several quality players who deserve playing time, however I think we’d be much better off if you’d keep (Jeremy) Pargo, (Matt) Bouldin, (Micah) Downs, (Austin) Daye and (Josh) Heytvelt on the floor together for as long as possible.

This would allow them to become a more formidable “team” when it really counts at the end of the year. Wait for one of these guys to get in foul trouble, commit a couple of turnovers, get tired, miss a couple of shots or even better, we get ahead by a comfortable margin, before taking them out. Stop yanking these guys for no better reason than getting someone else in.

I’m probably imagining this, but it seems like the guy who gets pulled has invariably just made a great play. Unless the game is out of reach, no less than three of these five should be in the lineup at all times unless someone is in foul trouble or having an off night.

These starters ran out to a 17-0 lead against Idaho. Shortly after the first substitutions it was 19-9. I’d rather see them keep their foot on the other team’s throat and go up 34-0 than 19-9.
