Ferris’ big fourth quarter turns close game into rout of LC

Jason Bates scored 17 points and Justin Stewart came off the bench to score 12 as Ferris beat Lewis and Clark 62-50 in a Greater Spokane League boys basketball game Monday at Ferris that had been rescheduled due to the extended football season.

Lewis and Clark (2-2) held a 42-40 lead going into the fourth quarter, but the Saxons clamped down on defense and outscored the Tigers 22-8 in the final period.

Bates and Taylor Kamitomo led Ferris (2-1) with eight rebounds apiece. Kamitomo also scored 12 points. LC’s Levi Taylor led all scorers with 19, including 13 in the first half.

Coeur d’Alene 61, El Segundo (Calif.) 50: Devon Austin scored 25 points, grabbed six rebounds and came up with four steals to lead the Vikings to a non-league win in Los Angeles. Connor White added 13 for the Viks.

The Viks held El Segundo’s 6-foot-8 center John Ryan to just eight points. It was the first win for the Viks on the three-game trip to L.A.

Lakeside (Idaho) 60, Mullan 41: Alex Campbell and Nate Weaselhead each scored 13 points to lead the Knights. Mullan’s Casey McKinnon led all scorers with 18.

Girls basketball

Timberlake 45, Newport 35: Sophomore Cassie Thompson scored 16 points, including 12 in the second half, as the Tigers beat the Grizzlies in a non-league girls basketball game.

Games postponed: The Sandpoint at Kellogg girls and boys basketball games scheduled for Monday were postponed due to weather. Kootenai also postponed games against Lewiston sophomore and junior varsity teams.

Women’s basketball

Laiken Dollente scored 26 points and former Gonzaga Prep standout Tara Cronin scored 13 and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds to lead visiting Portland (4-6) to a 73-66 win over Eastern Washington University.

Kyla Evans led Eastern (4-6) in scoring with 12 points and was followed by Tatjana Sparavalo with 11 and Nicole Scott with 10.

Evans led the team in rebounding with eight.

•Eastern Washington University junior Nicole Scott had a perfect performance on Saturday, earning her the Big Sky Conference co-player of the week award.

Scott shared this week’s honors with Montana’s Mandy Morales.

Soccer

North Idaho College women’s soccer player Natalie Nichols was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association All-American first team.

Nichols, a redshirt freshman forward from Post Falls, helped NIC appear in its first national tournament in Chandler, Ariz., in November, in which the Cardinals placed third.

Nichols finished the season with 14 goals and six assists and was also named to the NJCAA National Tournament All-Tournament team.

Men’s basketball

Whitworth moved up two spots in this week’s D3hoops.com men’s basketball top 25, without playing a game.

The Pirates (6-1) moved from 20th to 18th in this week’s poll. Whitworth has not played since Dec. 6. The Pirates will play an exhibition game tonight at 8 against Red Deer College (Alberta). The next official game is Dec. 28 against Simpson (Iowa) in the Ameriprise Whitworth Classic in Burlingame, Calif.
