NC students going to D.C. for inaugural

Rainey Coffin The Spokesman-Review

North Central High School students will have a once in a lifetime opportunity on Jan. 20 when they attend the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama.

World Strides, a company that provides educational student travel programs, approached the social studies department at NCHS in April, with the trip to Washington. History teachers Christine Petterborg and Gabe Medrano made announcements to students, with fliers and posters and received interest from nearly 60 students.

On Jan. 17 five adults, including Petterborg and Medrano, and 17 students will leave Spokane for a five-day trip. Petterborg is looking forward to the trip, for herself and her students. “I, myself, have never been to Washington. They’re pumped and excited to go. I feel the same,” she said.

Their agenda will include a tour of the Capitol, laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, a visit to the Holocaust Museum, a tour of the war memorials and a visit to the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials. They have also planned a tour of the National Cathedral and are anticipating a tour of the White House.

District puts levy on ballot

The 2009 bond and levy election date has been set for March 10 by Spokane Public School’s Board of Directors.

With voter approval of the $288 million bond, Spokane schools would receive approximately $44 million state matching funds. The $332 million would make the district’s long-range proposed plan to restore and replace some of the district’s oldest and least efficient buildings including Ferris High School and Westview, Hutton and Finch Elementary schools. The bond will give the district the funds to improve safety and security of the buildings, upgrade technology, and allow smaller improvement projects at all schools.
