Another milestone win for Cougs

Year two of the June Daughtery era of women’s basketball at Washington State University is shaping up to be one of the best seasons in recent memory.

April Cook scored 17 points and Katie Appleton and Jazmine Perkins chipped in 12 apiece and the Cougars defeated Hawaii 66-48 Friday at Honolulu in the first of consecutive games between the schools. The teams will play again Monday.

The victory was the Cougars’ fifth straight, the longest WSU streak since 1998. The win also gave the Cougars seven non-conference victories this season, the most since winning nine non-conference games in 1995.

Washington State fell behind by 11 points in the first half, but Appleton and Cook each hit three first-half 3-pointers to help the Cougars take a 32-28 lead at the half. They combined for 20 of WSU’s 32 points in the half.

The Cougars (7-2) opened the second half on a 15-0 run while holding Hawaii (2-8) scoreless for the first 10-plus minutes of the half.

Rosie Tarnowski had a career-high 10 rebounds for the Cougars, while Appleton dished out a team-high seven assists.

Gonzaga 69, Montana 63: Courtney Vandersloot had 22 points and eight assists and the Bulldogs ended the Grizzlies’ 21-game home-court winning streak in Missoula.

Heather Bowman added 13 points and Kayla Standish 11 for Gonzaga (10-3). Kelly Bowen pulled down 10 rebounds.

Sarah Ena led four Grizzlies in double figures with 20 points.

Montana is 8-3.

Washington 62, Florida State 60: Sara Mosiman scored 12 points to lead the Huskies (4-4) to a 62-60 victory over the Seminoles (9-3) in the second round of the Caribbean Classic in Cancun, Mexico.

Jacinta Monroe and Alysha Harvin scored 13 apiece to pace Florida State.

Arena football

The Spokane Shock announced the addition of three more returnees for the 2009 arenafootball2 season.

Defensive back Sergio Gilliam, wide receiver Andy Olson and wide receiver Patrick Bugg re-signed with the team, bringing the total of players from the 2008 National Conference championship team to return this season to 11.

The Shock also traded linemen Aryan Barto and Jacob Owens to the Manchester Wolves for free agent claiming order, moving from the 25th spot to 15th.
