New Year’s Eve events planned for all ages

Patty Hutchens Staff writer

People may be staying closer to home for the holidays, but if one still wants to get away for a long weekend over New Year’s, then Sandpoint is the perfect destination.

Whether you are young or old, looking for an exciting night out or just in search of a relaxing place to ring in the New Year, Sandpoint will have something for everyone this week.

For those who want to get away for an early dinner and make it home before ringing in the New Year, Stage Right Cellars in downtown Sandpoint will offer a great alternative to the traditional late-night parties. From 6 to 8 p.m. guests will be treated to the music of Mike Strain as well as complimentary snacks.

Sandpoint resident Chris Lutes counts Stage Right among one of her favorite places in Sandpoint. “It is a very comfortable place to go for a glass of wine and relax,” said Lutes, who adds that she enjoys the fact she can listen to music and still enjoy the conversation. “It’s big enough that you can still visit without the music overpowering your conversation.”

Lutes said she enjoys visiting with not only the patrons but also the manager, Rory. “He is very knowledgeable about wine and really interesting to talk to,” said Lutes. “They have a huge selection of wine, beer and even cigars, which is interesting because you really don’t see that around much anymore.”

Coldwater Creek Wine Bar, just upstairs from the Coldwater Creek store, will host an evening of entertainment by local musician Mick Coon. Originally from Sandpoint, Coon lived in California for a period of time to pursue his music career. He recently moved back to his hometown and already has a following.

If family activities are what you’re looking for, Schweitzer Mountain Resort is a longtime favorite for those who seek a New Year’s Eve that offers something for all ages.

This year will not be any different. There will be a ’Tween Party for kids ages 7 to 11, a tubing party for kids 12 to 17, and for the younger ones Kinderkamp will offer a party, too. The adults can enjoy the music of Clumsy Lovers in Taps Lounge and know that the kids are being well supervised and having a lot of fun. Tickets for all events are available by calling the Activity Center at Schweitzer.

New Year’s Eve also provides a prefect opportunity to check out the newest restaurant in town, 41 South, located in Sagle before crossing the Long Bridge into Sandpoint. Formerly known as The Landing, the restaurant serves country French cuisine and is currently taking reservations for New Year’s Eve.

Perhaps one of the biggest New Year’s Eve traditions in this community is the annual party put on by The Angels Over Sandpoint, a nonprofit organization that raises funds to help those in need in Bonner County. This annual fundraiser which is called The Semi Normal Semi Formal will be at the Sandpoint Business and Events Center, 102 S. Euclid at the intersection of Pine Street.

Paula Marcinko is a member of the Angels and says this year’s event is sure to be a hit.

“The doors open at 8 p.m. with the music starting at 9,” said Marcinko. “The band this year is Too Slim and the Tail Draggers – formerly of Spokane and now in Seattle.”

She says there will appetizers provided by local restaurants as well as a no-host bar.

“People can come dressed however they want,” said Marcinko.

While there may be tickets available at the door the night of the event, Marcinko said they are hoping for a sellout and if people want to attend they should purchase their $25 ticket ahead of time at Eve’s Leaves, Petal Talk, F C Weskil’s, Stitchin’ Sisters or online at www.sandpoint.com.

In addition to music, hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar, there will also be what Marcinko says is a fun, fabulous and funky silent auction.

“There will be new things and older things that people in the community have donated for auction,” she said. Included are a pool table, jewelry and yoga gift certificates.

Gail Fendley also a member of Angels Over Sandpoint said fundraisers like this are vital for the group to fulfill its mission of helping those in need. “I’m sure we will have a lot of requests for help (from needy people in the community) in 2009 if it is anything like the latter part of ’08,” said Fendley.

Some of the ways in which the Angels help those in need include assistance with medical bills, preparing food for people, supplying firewood and helping with utility bills.

If you are unable to attend the Semi Normal Semi Formal, but would like to donate to the Angels Over Sandpoint you can mail a donation to P.O. box 2369, Sandpoint, ID 83864 or e-mail them at angelsover sandpoint@gmail.com.
