Johnson guides Bulldogs

Colfax junior Kayla Johnson shot out the lights at the SunDome Shootout on Saturday.

Johnson scored a tournament-record 34 points to rally the Colfax Bulldogs to a 67-60 girls basketball win over the Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) Eagles in the final day of the two-day tournament in Yakima.

Johnson, who hit two 3-pointers and 8 of 8 from the free-throw line, also set the two-day tourney record with 55 points. She scored 26 of Colfax’s 42 points in the second half.

Johnson, a former post player who moved to guard this season, also had eight rebounds and three steals.

Rachel Johnson added five assists for Colfax.

The Bulldogs (4-1) rallied after the Eagles took a 19-8 lead into the second quarter.

Leslie Stillar scored 23 points for Lakeside (4-4), which dropped its fourth consecutive game.

Newport 57, Kiona-Benton 44: Miranda Frederick shot 6 for 6 from the line down the stretch to help the Grizzlies (8-3) seal their win over the Bears at the SunDome Shootout. Kiona-Benton’s Sara Dannoy led all scorers with 16 points.

Connell 51, Deer Park 29: Debbie Molsbarger scored seven fourth-quarter points to help the Eagles hold off the Stags (1-5) at the SunDome Shootout. Connell outrebounded DP 36-24 and took advantage of 25 Stags turnovers.

Cashmere 44, Colville 23: The Bulldogs (4-3) broke away in the second half to defeat the Indians (3-3) at the SunDome Shootout. Colville’s Jordan Brons scored a game-high 12 points.

Coeur d’Alene 58, Catherine McCaulley (Maine) 31: Kama Griffitts hit three 3-pointers and scored 17 points to lead the Vikings (10-0) past a team from Portland, Maine, to open the Diamond State Classic at Wilmington, Del.

West Valley 60, Wellpinit 29: Hannah Love scored 14 of her 23 points in the first quarter to launch the Eagles (5-0) past the Redskins (1-3) in the championship game of the Lions Christmas Tournament at Reardan.

Reardan 61, Chewelah 46: Sara Wilke scored nine of her 17 points in the second quarter as the host Indians (4-2) defeated the Cougars (1-7) in the Lions Christmas Tournament game for third and fourth places. Reardan’s Ynaisia Van Komen added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Boys

Newport 60, Kiona-Benton 26: Chaize Exkano hit 4 of 7 3-pointers on the way to 16 points as the Grizzlies (5-5) defeated the Bears at the SunDome Shootout. Newport’s Devon Willenbrock added 12 points, seven assists and three steals.

Colville 56, Connell 45: Miguel Anaya hit three 3-pointers and scored 10 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter as the Indians (3-3) defeated the Eagles at the SunDome Shootout. Colville hit 21 of 24 free throws, including 13 of 16 in the final quarter.

Cashmere 69, Deer Park 54: Chad Carlquist scored 10 points during the decisive fourth quarter, including two 3-pointers to help snap a third-quarter tie, and the Bulldogs defeated the Stags (1-5) at the SunDome Shootout. Dallin Lundgren scored 12 points to lead three Stags in double figures.

Naches Valley 56, Colfax 32: Brandon Gillespie and Adam Ranger scored 11 points apiece to lead the Rangers past the Bulldogs (3-2) at the SunDome Shootout.

Chewelah 50, Reardan 43: Stryker Smith scored 18 points and Dallas Garner hit four 3-pointers to lead the Cougars (6-2) past the host Indians (1-5) in the championship game of the Lions Christmas Tournament. Mike Matson scored 18 points for Reardan, which suffered three injuries.

Wellpinit 66, West Valley JV 55: Cody Flett scored 28 points to guide the Redskins (3-1) past the Eagles in the consolation game of the Lions Christmas Tournament.
