CdA boys cruise in Holiday Inn Invite

Devon Austin scored 26 points, hitting 3 of 4 shots from beyond the 3-point line, as Coeur d’Alene crushed Monroe 70-41 in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational boys basketball tournament at North Idaho College on Monday.

In other boys games at NIC, Post Falls edged Walla Walla 50-47 and Chief Sealth defeated Lake City 64-47.

The Vikings trailed Monroe 18-16 at halftime, but came out with a full-court press that produced nine steals. That defense, along with timely 3-pointers in the third quarter from Austin and Curtis Reno, propelled the Viks to the easy win. They outscored Monroe 55-23 in the second half.

Reno and Deon Watson each scored 10 for the Viks and Connor Williams had 10 rebounds.

Post Falls 50, Walla Walla 47: Freshman Marcus Colbert made two free throws with five seconds left to lift the Trojans.

Post Falls trailed 37-31 going into the fourth quarter, but went to a full-court man press to hold Walla Walla to just 10 points.

Shawn Reid led the Trojans with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Connor Hill scored 10 points, including five in the fourth quarter.

Chief Sealth 64, Lake City 47: A full-court press led to 29 turnovers for the Timberwolves. Nate Frisbie led Lake City with 11 points.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 55, Waterville 35: Kyle Tucker scored 21 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead the Warriors to the non-league win in the Waterville Christmas tournament.

Girls basketball

Kama Griffits and Carli Rosenthal each scored 15 points as Coeur d’Alene rallied in the fourth quarter to beat Holy Cross of Maryland 58-48 in the second game of the Diamond State Classic in Delaware.

The Vikings will play Oregon City in the championship game tonight.

Almira/Coulee-Hartline 44, Waterville 30: Sophomore wing Sarah Gloyn scored 17 points to lead the Warriors to the non-league win in the Waterville Christmas tournament.

Dayton 43, LaCrosse-Washtucna 29: The Tigercats trailed by just one, 16-15, at halftime, but too many turnovers in the third quarter led to a five-point period and a loss to Dayton.

In other games: Lewiston beat Mount Si 75-48 and Walla Walla defeated Post Falls 55-47 in the Holiday Inn Express Invitational girls tournament at North Idaho College. No other details were available.
